A minimum of thirteen individuals lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
